William F. Johnson, a retired instrumental music teacher and Air Force Command Sergeant Major turned master craftsman was the subject of a local art show opening on Friday at the the Virgin Islands Council On Arts. Mr. Johnson who has degrees in music education and music arts began studying woodturning eight years ago and has been in arts and crafts shows in St. Croix, St. John, St. Thomas, and Tortola. His "pierced and segmented pieces of wood art" incorporate intricate and delicate designs and use local woods to include mahogany, genip, and mango and show scenes of moko jumbies, sea life, and island reliefs. Simpler designs highlight the tones and grooves of the woods and undulate with interesting shapes and composition.
